Can you help me choose an assistant manager?

I'm posting this question here because I usually get a better sounding board here, and it could be called a survey.I got promoted to deli manager today, and was given the responsibility of choosing who would be my assistant.

#1-This girl is a demon worker (19 yrs old),never on time, calls in once a month, but she takes on more than she is asked to do.She makes mistakes, not alot, but when she does, they're bad ones, she doesn't get along with the customers, but she has a true gift for smoothing over employee diferences. She is overly emotional.

#2-(age 32)she is not very fast, but her workmanship is superb. She is great with the customers, but causes some pretty bad problems between the other employees.Even so, some of the employees look up to her.She has never called in,always early, and stays in her area until the job is done right.

Got a real problem here. Which one would you choose? Why?

Can you help me choose an assistant manager?
I would say #2, but they weren't very good choices to chose from. :)
Reply:ask yourself this.... if i were sick and had to be gone for a week, how would things be when i got back if #1 were left in charge???? ask the same about #2.

personally i'd pick #2 because being a manager isn't about making friends with everyone.... it's about being dependable, accountable, and making sure the job is done.
Reply:#2 seems like you can count on more but you need to create parameters in regards to employee relations.
Reply:If you absolutely need to pick between these two.... I would go for #2.

You need someone who is reliable and who will show up for work. My first impression of employee #1 is why/how is still there?
Reply:Girl #2 on a trial basis after you express your concerns. Put her on a probation period...if she passes, then she keeps the position.
Reply:Definitely number 2. With her you've got a good base to start with. Dependability, customer oriented in a customer based industry, co-worker who look up to her. Any other minor flaws can be addressed %26amp; worked on. And easily brought up during annual interviews in the part that asks what the employee should be working on the next year.
Reply:I would have to choose #2 just because of her age. You should have kept their ages a secret.
Reply:#2 seems to be the better choice, but if you had the choice to interview outside or pick a 3rd choice you might want to consider that.
Reply:Probably #2, age usually comes w/ maturity
Reply:number 2, sorry number 1, just not enough experience!
Reply:which one do you personally get along with better?

Which one would you trust to do the job?

Who is going to stick with it the longest?

And you already answered your question when you called #1 a demon worker. You've made up your mind already but I would go with #2 because the customers are what keeps all of you in a job.
Reply:#2. She's older and probably needs the money. Also, its about the customers - if she gets along well with the customers, that's what you need. Being on time is very important too.
Reply:i think #2..although not a fast worker she is one that you can count on to get the job done..when promoted, tell her there is going to be some changes and confront her on some of the things that you mentioned
Reply:#2. Older, More experienced, and dependable. If you feel she causes problems, than before you actually give her the position, talk with her about this. Tell her with this title she will have to be more open minded and chill out. She sounds like the better choice to me. Good Luck!
Reply:i would hire someone new with management experience.
Reply:The one that sleeps with you !!
Reply:if you get to choose i would choose to hire someone else.... but if i had to go with one of these people it would be #2.... because it would be easier to emprove on moving faster and causing problems with employees than to make someone be on time.... being late and calling in is like really bad habbit thats very hard to break..... customer service is number # 1 oh yeahh..... 19 years old?
Reply:number 2. because she seems to be more reliable and stuff. the 19 year old just wants the money and does not want to work fromt he sounds of it. if number 2 is everything u say than i would pic her she seems like she would be a way better worker

and trust me i know about workers i have 2 businesses soo..
Reply:#2 seems to be the better pick of the two. Depending upon the problems she has with other employees, it may be a good thing, there may not be any special treatment becuase of friendship between employess. If they look up to her already then the transition of her new roll will be an easy one. You don't want to put someone in a management roll that you can not count on to be there.
