Can your employer legally send a non-anonymous survey asking what kind of car you drive?

I work for a company closely tied to one of the "big 3" automakers and our company strongly pushes for the employees to support our client (the automaker) by suggesting we drive one of our client's types of cars. One day at work we were sent a mandatory email survey asking what kind of car we drive, any secondary car we drive and what kind of car our spouse drives. I'm curious if that's legal since our responses won't be anonymous. I'm concerned that a "wrong answer" will be a permanent mark on my work record, especially since there is pressure to drive a car that is made by our client.

In the US -- It is legal to ask you. It does not have to be anonymous.
Reply:It's legal to ask but illegal to take any kind of action in response to that question and if they do you my friend, have a multi million dollar lawsuit drop into your lap. Don't worry, you will be fine.
